However, tonight I have been proved wrong. I have learned just how much of an idiot I am. I am reminded of the show, "Are you smarter than a 5th grader". Well, I can honestly admit that I am NOT smarter than my 7th grader....Ugghh. My son Caleb came home today from school in tears because he is LOST in math.
So I sit down to try to help him.........HELP!! I really could not! (I am embarrassed to actually say that). While math was never my strong area, I did have all the normal math classes in high school, as well as, in college. I even had statistics in graduate school and got good grades......and yet I can't do 7th grade math, really?????
I know this sounds completely un-teacher-like, but here goes: I have made it this far in life and apparently cannot do 7th grade math, but I've really NEVER had a need for it. So, exactly how important is it? (I know - apparently important so I can help my 7th grader with his homework). But, geez......nothing on his homework was authentic.....unless perhaps you are a mathematician. I can probably assume he will not become one of those.....
No wonder I teach the little kids.....I CAN do kindergarten math!!! :0)
All that thinking made me tired - to bed I go!

You're not an idiot!! =)

If it makes you feel any better, we took a practice 3rd-grade math test during inservice on Tuesday and I got like 4 wrong . . . out of 10 . . . that's a 60, right? Are. You. Kidding. Me? It was brutal!
ReplyDeleteHang in there - we hired tutors for our kids when the math got too hard.
